Thyroid balancing, using a combination of prescription and natural products is one of the most important elements for anyone dealing with a health imbalance. Some of the more common symptoms which will respond to thyroid balancing include, Fatigue, Depression, Difficulty losing weight, Constipation, Muscle Aches from Fibromyalgia, Hair loss and thinning hair, and dry skin. The most important thing you need to understand is that most doctors do not diagnose or treat mild low thyroid disorders. Most doctors are only interested in severe thyroid imbalance to the degree that can be life threatening and they do not appreciate the mild disorders that can be responsible for very troubling symptoms. I have had many patients that require very precise dosing of thyroid medication in order to feel well. The standard blood test to screen for thyroid is TSH, normal ranges from 0.5 -5.0. However an article in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet suggest that a TSH above 2.0 indicates a low thyroid. More thorough testing includes T4 and T3. Testing can be even more sensitive by obtaining free T4 and free T3. Furthermore, even when T3 tests normal, there can still be a problem because sometimes the body converts T4 to reverse T3. Reverse T3 measures as T3, but it does not work properly. Further testing can be done to measure reverse T3. Elevated levels of reverse T3 are described as Wilson’s syndrome after Dr. Wilson who first discovered the disorder. Lastly, even when levels of T4, T3 and reverse T3 are in the normal range, a person can have suppressed thyroid function due to thyroid resistance. Thyroid resistance is when there are adequate amounts of thyroid hormone but there is a resistance at the cellular level which does not allow proper function. Thyroid resistance can be caused by a variety of toxic elements as well as micro-organisms. In addition to feeling better, having more energy and being able to lose weight more easily, there are a number of important reasons to have your thyroid balanced. Published medical studies indicate that women with low but normal thyroid levels are 70% more likely to develop hardening of the arteries and have over twice the risk of developing a heart attack!! ( Annals of Internal Medicine, 2000 ) Concerning weight loss, a 1997 study revealed T4 meds alone such as synthroid and levoxyl produced only a minimal increase in metabolism. T3 meds such as cytomel or glandular T4-T3 combinations resulted in an average 18% increase in metabolism. Anyone needing to lose weight must have optimal replacement of a T3 containing thyroid medication.
